This review examines the criminal sentencing of violent domestic offenders with specific emphasis on the Canadian judiciary’s response. Given the prevalence of domestic assault cases in the courts, those non-fatal assaults occurring within “intimate” relationship serve as the primary focus of this report. In addition to covering issues pertaining to the criminal sentencing of violent domestic offenders, disposition statistics from a large Provincial Court jurisdiction in British Columbia are presented and analyzed.
