Profile: Gloria M. Gutman, Ph.D.

We are pleased to announce the appointment at the September 1994 BCIFV Annual General Meeting of Dr. Gloria Gutman as the new Chair of our Board of Directors. Dr. Gutman also co-chairs the Research Subcommittee on the Board.

Dr. Gutman developed and directs the Gerontology Research Centre and Gerontology Diploma Program at Simon Fraser University, where she holds the rank of Professor in the Faculty of Arts. She is also an Associate Member of the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Gutman is widely known in the field of gerontology as a teacher, researcher and consultant. She is the author/editor of twelve books and over one hundred scholarly articles, reports and papers on such topics as motor learning in older adults, stress management, elder migration, senior citizens' housing and long term care.

She has been a consultant to the Ministry of Lands, Parks and Housing in B.C., the Continuing Care Division of the B.C. Ministry of Health and Health Canada. She has served on a number of federal-provincial task forces, including one which established guidelines for comprehensive services for the psychiatrically impaired elderly, and one which developed design guidelines for housing and care facilities for the elderly. She also served on the National Advisory Committee for the 1986 Census.Dr. Gutman has always been very active in scholarly and community organizations, and today she is Chair of the organizing committee for the World Congress of Gerontology, which will be held in Vancouver in July 2001.
