Aboriginal Women's Council

The Aboriginal Women's Council (A.W.C.) B.C./Yukon has been established since 1986. The A.W.C. acts as an umbrella structure for aboriginal women's societies throughout B.C. and the Yukon to assist their member organizations in seeking funding for their various activities.

The purposes of the council are:

  • to be a networking centre for women of native ancestry throughout the Pacific and Yukon region
  • to provide a communication link between the Native Women's Association of Canada and other aboriginal women's organizations throughout the Pacific and Yukon region in all matters pertaining to concerns in each of the distinctive areas
  • to promote and to support the aims and objectives of each of the aboriginal women's groups within the Pacific and Yukon region
  • and lastly, to develop and provide training packages to enhance member groups in their growth and development.

Current member organizations include:

  • B.C. Native Women's Society
  • Professional Native Women's Society
  • Naukana Native Women's Association
  • Island Women of Native Ancestry
  • Upper Island Women of NativeAncestry
  • Urban Images for Native Women
  • Native Okanagan Women's League
  • Yukon Indian Women's Association

Amongst its projects, the A.W.C. is currently involved in phases one and two of a three phase research project with aboriginal women, entitled Women at Risk. This project seeks to systematically define the discrimination aboriginal women experience in housing, employment and social services; to develop strategies and formulate recommendations aimed at ending extended family violence, discrimination and poverty; and work toward the accreditation of Aboriginal healers to deal with the victims/witnesses in Aboriginal extended families. This project is funded through the federal Family Violence Initiative of Health Canada.

A.W.C. invites new membership. All native women's organizations are welcome to join for a yearly membership fee. Contact:
