Profile: Judy Moses

A valued member of the BCIFV Board of Directors, Judy Moses is also A/Director for the Aboriginal Health Policy Branch for the B.C. Ministry of Health. She has worked with the provincial government for five years, beginning as a contractor and later as the Director of Social Policy with the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs.

Judy is Cree from the Waskaganish Band on the east coast of James Bay on her father's side, and is a member of the Albany Band from her mother's side on the western shores of James Bay. She has lived in B.C. for 15 years and is married to a Kwakiulth fisher. Judy feels very strongly about the need for healing, as she lives with the pain from having both parents uprooted and raised in residential schools, and then trying to raise 13 children on their own.

Judy has over 15 years of policy and program experience in the federal and provincial government, experience in working with a First Nations organization in B.C. as well as management consulting experience in the private sector. She has a diverse professional background in the fields of social and health issues, economic development and natural resource management. Her entire career and personal endeavours have been with Aboriginal people.

Judy was one of the founders of the Aboriginal People's Business Association, the Regional Aboriginal Health Council, and was a former board member to the National Indian Arts and Crafts Corporation.

Currently, Ms. Moses is developing a provincial cervical screening program for Aboriginal women. She is enrolled in the diploma program for Public Sector Management, is a sessional instructor at the University of Victoria, and is assisting in organizing the 1995 Aboriginal Women and Wellness Conference. On a personal front, she is an aunt to nieces and nephews in several extended families and is in the process of her own healing journey. When asked about her high level of energy, Judy replies that she's Cree and lets no moss grow under her feet!
