Profile: Dr. Ronald Roesch

Dr. Ronald Roesch, a respected professor of Psychology at Simon Fraser University, chaired the Board of the BC Institute on Family Violence since its inception in 1988 until 1993 and now fulfills the position of Vice-Chair. His position on our Board complements his other current positions as Director of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program, SFU and Director of the Mental Health, Law and Policy Institute, SFU.

Dr. Roesch is well known for research and projects conducted in the areas of psychology and law. Since the early 70s his work has led him to positions in psychology at Arizona State Hospital in Phoenix, as a Program Specialist at the National Clearinghouse for Criminal Justice Planning and Architecture in Champaign, Illinois; as Director of the Criminology Research Centre, SFU; and visiting professor at Arizona State University.

Dr. Roesch acts as Series editor for the Perspectives in Law and Psychology book series sponsored by the American Psychology-Law Society as well as Editor of Law and Human Behavior, the bi-monthly journal also published by APLS. He sits on the Boards of several other prominent psychology, criminology and legal journals.

Dr. Roesch has written and edited ground-breaking books and articles, including the BCIFV published book, Family Violence: Perspectives on Treatment, Research and Policy. In addition, Dr. Roesch administers research grants and contracts, most recently for Surrey Pretrial Services Center, B.C. Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission, the John Howard Society, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Department of Justice.

Throughout his career, Dr. Roesch has received numerous awards and honours, including the Social Issues Dissertation Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and the Gavel Award from the American Bar Association. He recently served a term as president of the American Psychology-Law Society.
