Specialized Victim Assistance in Matsqui/Abbotsford

The Matsqui/Abbotsford Specialized Victim Assistance and the Indo-Canadian Specialized Victim Assistance Programs operate out of Matsqui/Abbotsford Community Services. There are several Specialized Victim Assistance programs throughout British Columbia. Although all such programs are under the mandate of the Ministry of Attorney General, some of these programs may choose to deliver services in a different format in order to meet their specific community needs.

The Specialized Victim Assistance Program and the Indo-Canadian Specialized Victim Assistance Program in Matsqui/Abbotsford provide justice related information and support to victims of adult sexual assault, spousal assault and child sexual assault. Starting with an initial intake and assessment of the client's needs, the programs gather relevant information from Crown Counsel and the Police to facilitate a coordinated approach, as well as to provide clear and accurate information to the client.

The client is taught about the court process in order to reduce the anxiety they may feel about the justice system. They are given information about the legal process on a one-to-one basis through the use of relevant written materials, visits to Crown Counsel and a court tour prior to their court appearance. Accompaniment to preliminary hearings and trials are also provided.

Information and assistance with Criminal Injury Compensation and Victim Impact forms are also an important part of our services. Finally, after court referrals to relevant support groups or for private counselling is made available to the program's clients. All the above mentioned services are offered in English, Punjabi and Hindi languages.

The Specialized Victim Assistance Program has been in existence in this community since 1986 and the Indo-Canadian Specialized Victim Assistance Program since 1992. These programs have been tremendously received within this community. The continued support of the Ministry of Attorney General speaks well of a government making a commitment to the special needs of victims of crime throughout our province. However, although a tremendous amount of work has been achieved for victims of crime there is still a long road ahead to recognizing the diverse needs of the individuals who utilize these programs' services.

The individuals working in these programs are proud to be an integral part of a criminal justice system that is trying to meet the needs of this community, as well as the province.
