Public Education and Training at Battered Women's Support
Services
Education and Training Program
Battered Women's Support Services delivers education and
training to over one hundred groups every year. These groups
range from university students to transition house workers,
from community groups to hospital staff. We provide information,
skills, and resources, as well as our own publications on
violence against women in intimate relationships. We also
act as consultants for groups needing more information on
providing services for battered women.
Topics covered in our education and training program include:
- what is battering?
- the social context of battering
- the connections between battering and racism, poverty,
and other forms of oppression
- the impact of battering on women
- effects of violence on children who witness it
- lesbian battering
- profile of a batterer
- how to provide support and advocacy to battered women
- legal issues for battered women
- community resources for battered women
- peer counselling skills
- group facilitation skills
- issues for teenaged battered women
Dating Violence Program
Every year, we are contacted by more and more schools and
youth programs seeking information on dating violence. We
provide education and training for both youth and adults on
this issue.
Topics include those listed above as well as:
- healthy relationships
- what is dating violence?
- confronting abusive behavior
- how to help a friend who is being abused
- resources and skills for working with teenaged women in
abusive relationships.
We also provide training for teen peer counsellors twice
a year at our offices, on the issue of dating violence.
Unfortunately, the education program at BWSS does not receive
core funding. Fees for our services are determined on a sliding
scale basis, and can be discussed with the Education Coordinator.
