School Based Anti-Violence Curriculum

Healthy Relations is a violence prevention curriculum for junior high school students developed by Roger Davies, an adult literacy program coordinator in Halifax, teacher Peter Davison, a former teacher now a consultant on sexual harassment and violence prevention, and Andrew Safer. These three men are all members of Men for Change, a Halifax, Nova Scotia men's group formed after the Montreal Massacre of December 6, 1989. The series is being used in Nova Scotia Schools, and Ontario Schools. It is also being used in Florida Schools, and is under consideration for use in Texas and California School Districts.

The first booklet for Grade 7 is focused on helping students learn how to deal with aggression. The second booklet for grade 8 focuses on gender equality and media. The third component for Grade 9 focuses on forming healthy relationships. This lesson investigates male violence against women and moves on to an exploration of healthy relationships. This violence-prevention curriculum has been recommended for secondary school students by the Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children in London, Ontario.
