Board Member Profile
Simon Verdun Jones
Simon Verdun Jones has been a member of our Board since
the inception of the BC Institute on Family Violence in 1989.
He will be serving as our Chair for the 1997-1998 year.
Dr. Verdun Jones, Professor of Criminology at Simon Fraser
University received his law degree from Cambridge University
and then his masters and Ph.D in law at Yale University. He
undertook postgraduate studies at Cambridge University at
the Institute of Criminology.
Dr. Verdun-Jones has had the unique experience of teaching
in numerous countries around the world, including Canada,
the United States, Australia and England. Most recently, Dr.
Verdun-Jones was a visiting fellow at the Midlands Centre
for Criminology and Criminal Justice at Loughborough University
(England). In addition, his interest in the field of international
mental health law has, over the past decade, taken him to
Australia, Belgium, England, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Norway,
Scotland, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, and the USA.
Dr. Verdun-Jones' major academic interests include criminal
law, criminal procedure and evidence, mental health law, mentally
disordered offenders, sentencing, protection of the elderly
from abuse, legal aspects of combating the sexual abuse of
children, family violence, research ethics and the Canadian
Criminal Justice System.
Dr. Verdun-Jones has maintained an active interest in the
field of applied criminology. In addition to sitting on our
board, he is currently an Honorary Board member of the Lower
Mainland Purpose Society for Youths and Families.
