Profile of Dr. Mary Russell

Mary Russell is Professor of Social Work at the University of British Columbia and a valued member of the Board of the BC Institute on Family Violence. Dr. Russell received her Ph.D. in Psychology from S.F.U. and her M.S.W. from U.B.C. Prior to her post-graduate career, she was employed as a Social Worker at the Woodlands School, Vancouver Hospital, and at a psychiatric clinic in Sydney, Australia.

Dr. Russell's scholarly and professional interests have largely related to gender issues, particularly as they relate to violence and abuse. A skill based analysis of feminist counselling, developed as part of her Ph.D. dissertation, was subsequently published (1984) as Skills in Counseling Women: The Feminist Approach.

A major study into treatment of male abusers led to the development and evaluation of an innovative treatment program, Confronting Abusive Beliefs, which now is being utilized internationally. The program is described in detail in a joint publication with J. Frohberg (1995), Confronting Abusive Beliefs: Group Treatment for Abusive Men. Dr. Russell has been a member of the Board of Registration of Social Workers of B.C. and served on the Marriage Education Committee of the BC Council for the Family. She has a long standing association with Family Services of Greater Vancouver, where she has provided couple counselling, co-led groups for abusive men, and provided research consultation.

At U.B.C. Dr. Russell chairs the MSW Curriculum Committee, is a member of the Women's Resource Centre Advisory Committee, and has been active in various roles with the Faculty Association, presently holding the position of Vice-President. In her work on the Board of the BC Institute on Family Violence, Dr. Russell is a member of the Research Committee and co-editor of the ublication, Stopping the Violence: Changing Families, Changing Futures.
