BCIFV Named Candian Health Network's "Violence Affiliate"

Effective March 1, 2000, the BC Institute Against Family Violence will become the lead agency in the Canadian Health Network's Violence Affiliate. Our primary role as "Violence Affiliate" will be to provide leadership and content expertise in the area of violence, and to support CHN's national operational network. Together with Toronto-based Education Wife Assault and the National Clearinghouse on Family Violence, we will respond to health information requests, expand network affiliates and develop resources for the growing CHN website, including exper-reviewed "Frequently Asked Questions" on topics such as child abuse, youth violence, partner abuse, familial homicide, criminal harassment, etc.

CHN aims to help Canadians make more informed and better decisions about their health through providing easy Internet access for Canadians looking for reliable, relevant, credible health information. At CHN, you can find information on the following topics: Active Living, AIDS/HIV, Alternative Health, Cancer, Determinants of Health, Environmental Health, Healthy Eating, Injury Prevention, Mental Health, Relationship, Sexuality/Reproductive Health, Substance Use/Addictions, Violence, and Workplace Health, among others. You can also search for information specific to groups such as Aboriginal Peoples, Children, People with Disabilities, Seniors, and Youth, for example.

Some of the titles currently available on the wesite, courtesy of Education Wife Assault and the National Clearinghouse on Family Violence, include: "How do I respond to a woman who is being abused?", "What is child abuse:", "What is known about the abuse of older adults?", and "How common is woman abuse in relationships with partners?".

The Violence Affiliate website will be revamped and expanded over the coming year. We invite you to visit the site, review its current contents and let us know what topics you'd like to see addressed onthis online resource in the future. Please contact Kai-Lee Klymchuk at the Institute with your suggestions (604) 669-7055 or email publications@bcifv.org.
